Tunng vs Dollboy vs Dollboy vs Tunng
- 7": Static Caravan/Different Drummer [VAN94;Diff7-28]
- release date: May 2005 [tbc]
- It was a simple crossing of paths. The static brothers had fired up their Ford Zephyr and picked up Different Drummer head honcho Ricardo heading for 304 Holloway Road, London. The in car record player was spinning dollboy's 'plan for a modern city' and 'this is tunng' as we went and by the time we got to the studio a plan was hatched to cross-pollinate the tunng and dollboy dna.
- Oliver 'Dollboy' Cherer started his long, but colourful, career in music remixing for Australian singer Robin Loau, with the help of old friend James Atkin, then of EMF. This led to a band, Cooler, who made very electronic big beat records for Polydor, which led to single of the week three times for three singles in NME and Big Issue, and by Steve Lamaq. They were soon called upon for their remix skills and worked their magic on such bands as; Shed 7, Rare, Terrovision, Elastica and Alabama 3. They toured with Bentley Rhythm Ace and Fuzz Townsend. They also did a Breeze Block live session for Mary Anne Hobbs. Oliver met the other 'Dollboys', Jack Hayter, Alan Outram and Philip Outram when they were playing in a strange Lewisham Country band. Alan had booked Oliver as a dub Theremin player for one of his electric cabaret nights, Pearloid Blue.
Resplendent in all its languorous glory, Dollboy's Plans For A Modern City "aspires to a place in the pantheon of ambient music on par with classics such as Global Communications' 76:14 or The KLF's Chill Out" (XLR8R)
"You stick on a new cd straight out of the jiffy bag and it just happens to be exactly the music you need/want despite having never heard it or read the info sheet. It surrounded me with beauty" (James Taylor, Swayzak)
'One of the surprise hits of Big Chill Eastnor 2004' (Mixmaster Morris)
- So, Tunng. What then can you expect? Gentle Pagan beats, like the Beta Band lost in the Congo; scratchy electronica with a pastoral, quintessentially English dynamic and spooky semi-instrumentals. Many reviews have nailed their debut album 'This is Tunng' as the perfect spot music for The Wicker Man itself.
NME 7/10; Mojo 4 stars; Sunday times 4 stars; The Big Issue 4 stars; DJ magazine 4 stars
'A digital Pentangle' Andy Gill, The Independent
'It truly stands out from the hordes of undistinguished folk-tronica around. A cracker' Ben Murphy, DJ magazine
'Closer to the zeitgeist than the NME has been for many, many years' Big Chill on line
'This is a classic piece of beautiful folktronica' David Holmes, what's on your I-pod, Arena Feb 2005
The band are about to sign deals for Japan and USA, expect even more buzz soon.
